Bazarov arrives at his friend Arkady’s home where Nikolai Petrovich, Arkady’s father, and his brother Pavel Petrovich live. Here starts the story.

The character of Bazarov was created by the author in relation to the Nihilist movement, a Russian social movement contemporary to the period of the novel.

In this chapter, Bazarov is pursued by Pavel Petrovich who represents the old order and is agitated by the presence of “Mr Nihilist” in his house.
